SEMO student in critical condition after scooter hit by truck

A Southeast Missouri State University student was hospitalized in critical condition late Sunday afternoon after the scooter she was driving collided with a full-size four-by-four pickup truck, authorities said.

Sunday evening, university officials were notifying the student's family, which is not local, said Sgt. Rick Schmidt of the Cape Girardeau Police Department. Until confirmation was received that that had been done, Schmidt said, they were not going to release the student's name.

Emergency responders received a call at about 2:30 p.m. to the intersection of Sprigg Street and Normal Avenue.

The student was driving southbound on Sprigg Street and the northbound black pickup was turning onto Normal Avenue. The driver of the truck, who also was not identified except that he is from the area, told police that that he had a green light. One witness was too shaken up by what she had seen to offer any details, but police would be talking to her again soon, Schmidt said.

The student was being treated for her injuries at Saint Francis Medical Center.
