Cape Girardeau firefighters battled intense flames at a house fire Tuesday evening in which a teenage boy was at home but not injured, the department said in a news release.

The city fire department responded about 5:55 p.m. to a structure fire at 1121 Patricia St., where firefighters were confronted with heavy fire showing from the garage. All four city stations responded, with backup provided by departments from Jackson, Scott City and off-duty crews, the release said.

Crews deployed two hand lines and were quickly able to bring the fire under control, the release said, though not before the garage area was a total loss and moderate fire and heat extended into the kitchen area, causing an estimated $55,000 in damage. The boy was alerted to the fire by the smoke detectors in the house and was able to get out.
