1988

Pledging to continue efforts in a new term to keep Missouri on "a road of progress," Gov. John Ashcroft announces his intention to seek re-election; Ashcroft speaks at the municipal airport, one of a series of news conferences he will hold on a two-day tour of the state.

A Guatemalan family, who fled their war-torn country in fear of their lives and wandered about Mexico for nearly six years, tells of the ordeal at a gathering at the Newman Center on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.

1963

The county court and representatives of the five county banks have set a meeting for April 16 in an attempt to resolve the question of where county money will be kept for the next two years; the issue was raised some weeks ago, when the three Cape Girardeau banks asked to be considered as depositories of county funds.

The Cape Girardeau City Council opens bids for the construction of its sewage disposal plant; the council has only 14 days to have a contractor under bond for the project, because the federal wage scale which is binding for this project expires in 14 days.

1938

Construction is moving forward at the new city park project on Highway 61, where a force of 90 men is on the job; nearby on Highway 61, another WPA crew of 75 men is engaged in ditch and bank-sloping tasks.

With rain serving to dampen what little enthusiasm there was in connection with yesterday's primary election, balloting was slow; winning in the lackluster vote were Edward L. Drum and incumbent Charles G. Wilson for mayor, and incumbents Phillip H. Steck, H.L. Coffman and L.H. Butler, and Paul R. Brooks, Frank Batchelor and Robert Reed for city commissioners.

1913

It is reported that the Klostermann building on Spanish Street, formerly occupied by the Powers Printing establishment, and which was constructed about as good as the Jackson courthouse, will be rebuilt so as to be used for a new automobile garage and sales agency.

Mrs. Annie Burrough and daughter, Mary, who have been living at the St. Charles Hotel during the winter months, have moved back to their farm on the Bloomfield Road.
