MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Charges were filed Wednesday against two Bollinger County men authorities say were involved in a Tuesday night shooting.

Robert Edward Morgan, 58, was charged with armed criminal action and first-degree assault in connection with the shooting of Nichole Morgan, 31. His son, Robert Keller Morgan, 24 -- the husband of Nichole Morgan -- was charged with second-degree domestic assault.

The charges were filed by Cape Girardeau County assistant prosecutor Jack Koester, who was involved due to the absence of Bollinger County Prosecutor Stephen Gray, who was away at a legal conference.

Robert Edward Morgan is being held in the Bollinger County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 cash-only bond. Robert Keller Morgan is being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond. Koester said additional charges could be filed against either or both when Gray returns to Bollinger County.

The men were arrested Tuesday after the shooting of Nichole Morgan at a home at 411 County Road 344 between Scopus and Mayfield, Mo. Bollinger County Sheriff Darin Shell said a 911 call was received at about 9 p.m. from Nichole Morgan's stepfather, who said she had been shot in the stomach by her father-in-law, Robert Edward Morgan, during a dispute he was having with her husband, Robert Keller Morgan.

By the time deputies arrived, both men had fled, and family members had taken Nichole Morgan to Perry County Memorial Hospital.

Nichole Morgan was flown to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau for further treatment.

Shell on Wednesday didn't know what sparked the hostilities, and he said they were intoxicated during the dispute.

As of Friday, Nichole Morgan was no longer at Saint Francis Medical Center, according to hospital spokeswoman Emily Sikes.

Both suspects will be arraigned April 10 at the Bollinger County Courthouse.
