Dr. David Stewart believes Southeast Missouri State University and Cape Girardeau have an excellent chance to become the new home of the Central United States Earthquake Consortium, which is now located at Marion, Ill.; the consortium board will gather Monday in St. Louis to hear presentations from the six institutions seeking the consortium.

An old, two-story brick building on Independence Street, just west of the River Heritage Museum, and a city storage structure were torn down this week because they were in a deteriorated condition.

1963

A.B. Mueller of Pocahontas has agreed, with the approval of the county court, to supervise the maintenance and gardening of the courthouse lawn; Mueller is known for having a green thumb and has supervised the lawn in previous years.

Cape Girardeau voters kill the proposed library tax increase, uphold the school levy and place one incumbent and one newcomer on the school board for the next three years; successful candidates to the board are incumbent J.J. Russell and Robert J. Stiegemeyer.

The Regenhardt Construction Co. of Cape Girardeau, a subsidiary of Harrison Securities, Inc., submitted the low bid at Frankfort, Ky., on Friday for the largest road construction job in Kentucky on which bids were received in the letting; the bid secures the contract for construction of a superhighway out of the capital toward Lexington, Ky.

Town and farm property owned by the old Sturdivant Bank is being listed for sale by Lyman E. Matthews, special deputy commissioner in charge of liquidation; there are 10 parcels of town property, all in Cape Girardeau, and 16 farms in Cape Girardeau, Scott, Stoddard and New Madrid counties, as well as a 1,200-acre wheat ranch in Alberta, Canada.

1913

By a majority of only 20 votes, F.A. Kage retained the mayoral post in Cape Girardeau, defeating lumber dealer J.W. Phillips in yesterday's election; in another surprise, Harry P. Gaines defeated Aga Flentge for city assessor.

Henry A. Nussbaum and Dr. G.W. Walker, nominated at a mass public meeting, were elected to seats on the Cape Girardeau Board of Education yesterday.
