Notre Dame senior Seth Sievers capped a big week with victories in the shot put and discus Saturday at the Jackson Invitational.

Sievers' week also included breaking his own school record in the shot put with a throw of 54 feet, 11 inches at the Tiger Town Invitational in Festus, Mo., and signing a letter of intent with Southeast Missouri State.

Sievers placed fifth in the discus and seventh in the shot put at last year's Class 3 state championships, and he came into his senior season already owning the school record in both events (51-10 shot put, 160-4 discus).

His winning shot put throw at the 23-team Festus meet beat his previous school record by more than three feet.

"At that particular time that was the top throw in the state in all classes," Notre Dame coach Bill Davis said about Sievers' throw at Festus on April 2. "That's an elite throw. Anything over 51 is considered a national-type throw. He's just been a real steadying influence with our younger kids, too. He's just a very mature young man and handles himself extremely well in pressure situations."

Sievers signed with Southeast on Friday, then turned in his best discus performance of the season at Jackson with a throw of 156-8. He also won the shot put with a toss of 50-1/2.

"He's been throwing 55-plus in practice, so it's not out of the question to throw around that range," Davis said. "Really, coming into the season, we thought the discus is what he would excel more at, but he's just really taken off on the shot here, which is great. Now he's a double threat."
