1988

After six years as a member of the Cape Girardeau Board of Education, Dr. Keith Deimund has decided to let someone else take over; he didn't seek re-election earlier this month, and this evening's board meeting will be his last as a member.

Northwest Airlink is pulling out of the Southeast Missouri market; the Memphis-based airline has been in the Cape Girardeau market since August 1986; the final day of service here will be May 1.

1963

Another of Cape Girardeau's landmarks is giving way to progress, as the old residence at 220 N. Sprigg St. is being razed in preparation for the construction of a modern office building; the 1 1/2-story dwelling is owned by John Knaup and has been his family home for many years; formerly, it belonged to his father, William Knaup, and prior to that, to his great-uncle, William Willeke.

Cape Girardeau Central Junior High eighth-grader June Siemers spelled down 35 other contestants in The Missourian's Regional Spelling Bee at Kent Library yesterday; runner-up was Bonnie Hotop of St. Vincent's School at Perryville, Mo.

1938

Cape Girardeau is preparing to entertain hundreds of high school students, who will open the annual three-day Southeast Missouri High School meet tomorrow; the event will bring more than 3,000 pupils from 82 high schools and at least 1,000 other visitors here for track and field carnival, and contests in music, literature, science and commercial divisions.

Discontinuance of the CCC camps at Delta, Hayti, Mo., and New Madrid, Mo., seems certain; the CCC program is being reduced in an economy move, and it has been decided to eliminate the drainage camps.

1913

Jim Miller returns in the morning from St. Louis, where he attended a stock sale; Miller brings back five fine horses to be used in his livery business.

The Chaffee, Mo., City Council on Tuesday passed an ordinance, as authorized by voters at the city election, to issue bonds for the purpose of building a city hall and jail; $8,000 will be raised by sale of the bonds.
