Thank you

Thank you to the lady who let me use her phone at Kidd's on South Kingshighway when my truck let out. In case I didn't say thanks at the time, I'll say thanks now and hope she sees this.

CJHS musical

Thanks to Mike Dumey and Central Junior High students for performing a Broadway musical I was so proud to see. Such a wonderful group of more than 150 students. Thanks again for your hard work.

Teaching gambling

To those people who complain about the evils of gambling at the college: Have you ever thought of an even bigger problem? That is the business college teaching people how to play the stock market.

Corn prices

The president of the Missouri Farm Bureau wrote a guest column saying farmland prices are the next bubble to burst. The corn prices are what is driving up the farmland prices, and that bubble burst last week. They will go down.

Sequester

Cancer clinics are now refusing to treat cancer patients with chemotherapy due to the sequester. Meanwhile, conservatives continue to say the sequester is no big deal or even beneficial.

Religion

Religion is not just about the afterlife, but a way through life that makes life majestic and joyful.

Conn. Legislature

Thank you to Connecticut's legislature for doing the right thing and what the American people want. Not giving in to the NRA for their money, like our Congress and Senate are doing. Even our own state House and Senate are so greedy that they love getting their hands on this blood money. I am a hunter and member of a family of hunters. I want to see something done now as Connecticut has done. I don't want to have this keep going to where there has to be real drastic measures taken and we lose our hunting rights.

Solving crimes

It was reassuring to read in the paper that the police are going to focus on solving crimes.

Roundabout

Does the casino have an over/under on when the first accident will happen in the silly Lexington roundabout? My pick is less than a week.

Voting problem

Low vision computers were not available for voting on April 2. Since it was not a federal election and the antique machines are expensive to program; I was told this was not mandated, so not done in Cape Girardeau County. I have been using these machines for a couple years due to macular degeneration and think this situation is being handled poorly, at best. The sheet magnifiers offered are distorting and largely obsolete -- a condescending, inadequate bare minimum.

New pope

As a lapsed agnostic, I agree with the direction Pope Francis seems to be taking the Roman Catholic Church. He is at least to some degree elevating the position of women in the church and reaffirming what should be the church's top commitment: helping the poor and promoting social justice.

Smoking, education

I would like to comment about the people complaining about secondhand smoke. When smokers buy a pack of cigarettes, the taxes are so high, the money is going to pay for the health care of their children. Remember President Clinton saying that? Therefore, by people not smoking, some child is going without an immunization because not enough tax money is going to pay for children's medication.

Dangerous drivers

I saw in the paper that Jefferson City will try to get people over 65 who shouldn't drive off the road. Instead of doing that, they should get hot-rodders and people under the influence off the road. They are more dangerous than the elderly.

Emerson coverage

What's all this glory given to Emerson in the Missourian. She deserves to have to pay for the election to replace her. What a dumb move to pull. The best part is that she will be replaced.

Water bill

I have a suggestion: After all the money the city is making from the casino, the city should reduce the water bill.

Deer vote

I'm glad clearer minds prevailed at the polls and the urban deer hunting idea was struck down. We only have our own selves to blame for taking their habitats.

Fix the streets

Now that the city has found extra money and doesn't know where to spend it, we need to go around to each neighborhood and start fixing our streets. Maybe our bad ones should be torn up and started over. There are so many streets with problems, especially in the arteries. We don't need to beautify the streets, we just need good ones.

Casino money, debt

I am calling about the person who wanted to spend casino money to pay off the federal debt. If you send an extra penny up there, you're not going to pay on the debt. They will only spend money on stupid things. I don't know what kind of people we have up there, but they spend money on stupid things. None of the money will go toward the debt.
