The collection of compost bags, bundled limbs and brush in Cape Girardeau has been suspended until further notice, the Cape Girardeau Public Works Department announced Thursday. Service to the compost drop-off containers at the Recycling Center Facility, 2007 Southern Expressway, also is suspended.

Jessica Sexton, public information specialist for the City of Cape Girardeau, said the city's holding area for collected compost, limbs and brush is inaccessible because of Mississippi River flooding.

As soon as the river drops below flood stage and the holding area is available, the department will resume Wednesday special collections and compost drop-off at the Recycling Center, Sexton said.

Wednesday special collection for non-yard waste items still is available by calling the department at 339-6351, Sexton said. The service free is available once a year to Cape Girardeau trash and recycling customers. Additional special collections are available for a fee.

Other options for yard refuse and compost also are available, she said. The transfer station in the 2500 block of South Sprigg Street will accept limbs or brush for $52.25 per ton plus the weekly fuel surcharge rate.

Some yard waste may be burned according to the city's open-burning regulations. Sexton said those wanting to do so should check with the fire department before burning to see if a day is designated as "OK to burn" or a "no-burn day" by visiting cityofcape.org/fire or calling 339-6330.

For more information, contact the Public Works Solid Waste and Recycling at cityofcape.org/recycling or the Public Works Department's main office at 339-6351.
