The city of Cape Girardeau opens bids for razing three vacant, one-story frame houses which were condemned by the city in 1985; Leon Cherry of C.D.L., an excavating company in Cape Girardeau, submits the low bid on all three demolition projects.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Construction of the 50,000-square-foot Columbia Sportswear manufacturing plant in Chaffee's industrial park is well underway; most of the steel work has been erected, and workers are putting on the roof and walls.

1963

Marquette Cement Co. has obtained a new river barge to be used in the transportation of cement; A.J. Coombs, superintendent of the Cape Girardeau plant, says the new barge is the largest, self-unloading barge operating on inland waterways; it is 276 feet long and 50 feet wide.

An inspection of Capaha Park yesterday turned up at least 20 trees which are considered beyond saving and were recommended for removal; City Park Commissioner J.W. McBride says the trees will be removed by the city during the summer, and new trees will be planted in the fall.

1938

The new factory building on West Independence Street is formally accepted by E.L. Haas, president of Superior Electric Products Corp., who at the same time announces that moving of machinery from St. Louis to the new plant will begin within a week; the operation here should begin by May 20.

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce is offering a cash award of $5 to the person who designs a cachet that will be symbolic of Cape Girardeau and can be used on letters and other mail going out of the city; the accepted design will be duplicated in rubber stamps for use by business houses here and the chamber.

1913

G.H. Reavis has resigned as Cape Girardeau's superintendent of public schools; he will continue to direct the local schools until the end of the term; after that he will be the state high school examiner, under Superintendent of Public Instruction William P. Evans at Jefferson City, Mo.

This being the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Cape Girardeau, The Republican newspaper prints two eyewitness accounts of the event.
