Catholic Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from throughout Southeast Missouri are awarded medals at an afternoon ceremony at St. Mary's Cathedral, with Bishop John J. Leibrecht making the presentations.

The congregation of First Baptist Church of Scott City holds a groundbreaking ceremony and note burning in the evening; the site is 15 acres on County Road 312, south of the present building at 401 Oak St.

1963

The Social Security Administration is paying in excess of $3,580,000 annually to Cape Girardeau County residents and $22,800,000 to those in a 13-county area of Southeast Missouri; monthly payments in Cape Girardeau are in excess of $290,000.

American flags which have flown over the nation's capitol in Washington, D.C., are presented to Cape Girardeau Central High School and Trinity Lutheran School as part of Loyalty Day observance; the presentation at Central is made by Jerry Reynolds, the winner of an Americanism slogan contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838.

A special baptismal service is held in the evening at First Baptist Church; those baptized are among the 127 who joined the church during a recent two-week evangelical campaign.

Ralph Zimmer of Cape Girardeau is elected president of the Southeast Missouri Catholic Youth Federation at a Catholic youth rally in Cape Girardeau; attending are about 800 young persons and others from the territory embraced in the Cape Girardeau Deanery.

1913

The new police force selected at the last meeting of the Cape Girardeau City Council, undoubtedly the best lot of men the city has ever had on its protective force, begin their new duties; patrolling the downtown area are Walker Johnson and Bernard Gockel, a former sheriff; walking the Haarig beat are Lee Atchison and Jeff Hutson; George Talley keeps upper Broadway safe; and Jim Green does the same for Mill Town.

As Messrs Eggers and Nevins were driving the monster gasoline road engine across the bridge in West Jackson, the large steel bridge suddenly collapsed under the weight of the engine and grader attached.
