Any eligible person who wishes to vote in the upcoming June 4 special election for the 8th Congressional District must register to vote by Wednesday.

Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander's office sent a voter registration reminder Friday.

"As Missouri's Secretary of State, I want to ensure that every eligible Missourian has the opportunity to cast a ballot on Election Day," Kander said in a news release. "The first step for any eligible Missouri voter is to make sure they are registered to vote, and that their voter registration is up to date. May 8 is the last day for Missourians to register to vote and be eligible to cast a ballot in the June special election."

Four candidates will be on the ballot, including Bill Slantz, a Libertarian, Doug Enyart of the Constitution Party, Democrat Steve Hodges and Republican Jason Smith.

The election is being held to fill the seat vacated in January by Jo Ann Emerson. Elections will take place in 30 counties in Southeast and Southern Missouri that make up the district.

Registered voters who have moved or changed their names must update their registration with their local election authority to ensure they make it to the correct polling place and are listed accurately in the voter rolls, according to Kander's release.

All voter registrations must be postmarked by May 8.

May 8 is a state holiday, so those who must register that day should check business hours with their local county clerk's office. The post office will be open for those wishing to mail in their voter registration, according to the release.

Cape Girardeau County Clerk Kara Clark Summers said her office also is accepting absentee ballots.
