FARMINGTON, Mo. -- Citing the fact that 12,500 more people are working in the district now than were working when he took office in 1981, 8th District U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson says he will continue to strive to create job opportunities; the stop here is the first of six appearances around the district that kick off Emerson's 1988 reelection campaign.

A Dutchtown man is being held in lieu of $8,000 bond in the Scott County Jail at Benton, Mo., after escaping from the Scott City jail last night; the escape also did $3,000 worth of damage to the jail.

The Cape Girardeau County Court joins city and business leaders of Cape Girardeau and Jackson in announcing its support of a proposed four-lane Highway 61 between the two cities.

The Cape Central Tigers, defending state baseball champions, will head to the final four-team tournament in St. Louis, playing Francis Howell on May 24; yesterday, the Tigers blanked West Plains, Mo., 4-0 in the Perryville Regional to advance.

Postmaster Nat M. Snider last night opened the Airmail Week observation here by mailing the first letter through airmail stamped with Cape Girardeau's new official cachet; the letter went to Julien N. Friant in Washington, D.C.

The Rev. Joseph F. Keusenkothen, associate pastor of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso, Mo., has been reelected president of the Southeast Missouri Credit Union; W.J. Masek of Cape Girardeau was named vice president, and Fred Burger of Kelso, Mo., as secretary.

The recent enumeration of the Jackson public school district shows an increase of 21 children of school age over last year; there are 300 white males, 330 white females, 45 black males and 60 black females, for a total of 735.

Work begins in the morning on Bellevue Street for the paving of the block running from Lorimier Street to where Spanish Street would be if the hill were trimmed down.
