Healthcare awards

Saint Francis Medical Center earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition under a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals. About 700 hospitals, approximately 15 percent of hospitals in the United States, applied for and received the award. Saint Francis has received it each year since 2004. To earn the designation, hospitals agree to criteria such as having respiratory therapists available 24 hours per day, seven days per week, ensuring all therapists are credentialed by the state of Missouri, all personnel are qualified and properly supervised and a doctor of medicine or osteopathy is designated as medical director of respiratory care services. The full 2013 list of QRCR hospitals is posted at yourlunghealth.org.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will conduct a four-week Conservation Reserve Program general sign-up beginning today and ending June 14. Sign-up for continuous CRP, including the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, the State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement Initiative, the Highly Erodible Land Initiative, the Grassland Restoration Initiative, the Pollinator Habitat Initiative and other related initiatives began May 13 and will continue through Sept. 30. "CRP is an important program for protecting environmentally sensitive lands from erosion and sedimentation, and for ensuring the sustainability of our groundwater, lakes, rivers, ponds and streams. Through the voluntary participation of our farmers and ranchers, CRP helps us to protect our natural resources, preserve wildlife habitat and bring good-paying jobs to rural America related to hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation," said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack by news release. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resource-conserving ground covers and are provided with rental payments and cost-share assistance. Contracts are between 10 years and 15 years. CRP is the largest USDA conservation program to improve water and air quality, prevent soil erosion and protect sensitive areas including those prone to flash flooding and runoff. It also has helped increase populations of pheasants, quail and ducks and is recognized as benefiting rare species like the sage grouse, the lesser prairie chicken and other grassland birds, the release said. For more information, call 243-1467 or visit the FSA service center at 480 W. Jackson Trail, Jackson or fsa.usda.gov.
