Cape Girardeau's rose display garden in Capaha Park is found in a shambles in the morning, the destructive work of malicious vandals; damage to the plants is estimated at between $1,000 and $1,500; the loss of countless hours of work by garden club members is inestimable.

Missouri Utilities Co. joins 15 other power firms in a projected $25,000,000 atomic energy research program that could result in reactor-produced power for Southeast Missouri consumers within the next 10 to 15 years.

1938

A severe rainstorm, striking in its greatest severity in the area northwest of Cape Girardeau, sends streams in the district to unprecedented high stages, causing considerable damage to farm and town property, to rural roads and bridges swept away by the rush of the water.

Two youths are burned, one seriously, and four others escape injury when a lightning bolt traveling into a house on a radio receiving set aerial strikes almost in the midst of a six-handed pinochle game at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Robinson near Patton, Mo.; their son, William Robinson, 18, and John L. Doggett Jr., 15, are knocked unconscious by the bolt.

1913

The Cape Girardeau Northern Railroad is making improvements to its holdings as fast as possible; one of the most noticeable improvements the road has made in Cape Girardeau is the resurfacing of Independence Street with "crick" gravel; a city ordinance provides that the railroad shall take care of the part of Independence Street it uses.

The hotel committee for the Elks Club convention next week makes another appeal for rooms to accommodate the thousands of visitors who will be in Cape Girardeau; anyone with a room to rent should contact Charles W. Boutin.
