Mother sentenced after ferret chews off child's fingers

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A northwest Missouri woman whose infant son lost seven fingers when he was attacked by a ferret has been ordered to undergo drug treatment.

Carrie Waldo was sentenced Tuesday to two years of probation and 30 days in a drug treatment plan after she pleaded guilty to second-degree child endangerment.

Waldo and her husband, Ryan Waldo, were accused of leaving the 4-month-old baby unsupervised with the ferret in January 2011.

They initially claimed to be asleep in their Grain Valley home at the time, but cellphone records showed the couple was not home when the baby was injured.

Ryan Waldo pleaded guilty last March to second-degree child endangerment and was ordered to serve 40 hours of community service and take parenting classes.

The Waldos' children are living with relatives.
