1963

A $3 million federal loan to the State College to finance construction of a dormitory complex will be approved June 8 by the Community Facilities Administration, according to a telegram received by Dr. Mark F. Scully, State College president, from the state's senators; the proposed construction calls for two six-story dorms and a dining and social center south and east of Magill Hall of Science.

Martha Harmon of Illmo, as Miss Southeast Missouri, will compete with 23 other young women in the annual Missouri pageant in Springfield.

1938

The 96th commencement for St. Vincent's College was conducted at the college last night, and the 15 young men who have finished their preparatory courses depart for their homes in several states; in September, the students will transfer to St. Mary's Seminary in Perryville, Mo., to begin eight years of study on their way to the Catholic priesthood.

A move by Commissioner Frank Batchelor during the regular City Council meeting to repeal the civil service ordinance enacted in February is defeated when the motion fails to get a second.

1913

The old Hemmerly place on Good Hope Street that was condemned by the City Council some time ago and ordered razed is at last being demolished; this is the building formerly occupied by A.E. Miles' barber shop and Mrs. Dan Stuebenrauch's restaurant; it burned about three years ago; a new building will soon take its place.

Louis LaCroix of Dutchtown, who was badly hurt some time ago by a log falling on him, is getting along nicely, and a speedy recovery is now hoped for by numerous friends.
