1988

Samuel E. Roethemeyer is the new pastor at Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson; before coming to Jackson, he served as pastor of St. John United Church of Christ in Trenton, Ill., since May 1979.

An early morning worship service has been added to the Sunday schedule at Mount Auburn Christian Church; the come-as-you-are service meets the needs of those who have to work on Sunday, those getting off work from a midnight shift and those leaving town too early for a later service.

1963

The Rev. Raymond Slay, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Illmo, Mo., dies unexpectedly at the parish rectory; Slay, 50, was ordained in 1941 and was pastor of St. Joseph's for more than three years.

Cmdr. Charles H. Brune of Cape Girardeau announces his retirement from the U.S. Naval Reserve after more than 20 years of service; Brune served during World War II, having received part of his training in the V-5 Naval Program at the State College, and worked as commander of the Tactical Air Support Squadron 792 of Memphis, Tenn., during his career.

1938

Dr. H.H. McGinty, pastor of First Baptist Church, is back in his pulpit at the church after a two-week absence while recuperating from an injury received in a fall; his Father's Day sermon is titled "Sons of Our Father."

About 25 members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau attended services yesterday at Altenburg, Mo., a celebration arranged to observe the founding of the first Lutheran college west of the Mississippi River; a crowd of about 2,000 attended the exercises, held in and around a log cabin that was erected as the first school building there.

1913

Talk about hot; the big thermometer at the Normal School registers 101 1/2 degrees at 2:30 p.m.; Professor A.C. Magill, the man who looks after the temperatures, says he expects the mercury to go higher tomorrow.

G.W. Cobble, a prominent farmer living near Jackson, is in Cape Girardeau on business; he is thinking of moving his family to Cape Girardeau in the fall, so his children will have a chance to have the benefits of the city's schools.
