The board of directors of the Central United States Earthquake Consortium has decided to keep the headquarters of the seven-state, earthquake preparedness organization at Marion, Ill., for at least another year; however, the board has asked Dr. David Stewart, assistant professor of the Southeast Missouri State University earth science department, to apply for the permanent executive directorship of the consortium.

Dr. J. Robert Ashcroft, father of Missouri Gov. John D. Ashcroft, is the featured speaker during the Mid-America Teen Challenge fund-raising banquet at the Holiday Inn Convention Center.

1963

Michael W. Seibel is one of 100 cadets of the Air Force Academy who sings at a special evensong service for the Air Force in Washington Cathedral, Washington, D.C.; he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Seibel of Cape Girardeau.

Students from St. Vincent's College will join the church's parishioners for Holy Week services; at today's Palm Sunday Mass, the students take part in the procession, blessing and distribution of palms, and aid in the singing of the Passion and Solemn High Mass; directing the choir is the Rev. Francis Gagnepain.

B. Hugh Smith was re-elected president of the Cape Girardeau Board of Education, when that body was reorganized last night; he will serve his fourth consecutive year as head of the board.

Robert B. Oliver III, Democrat of Cape Girardeau, is appointed by Gov. Lloyd C. Stark as prosecuting attorney of Cape Girardeau County; he succeeds Edward L. Drum, who resigned upon his election Tuesday as mayor of Cape Girardeau.

1913

The Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau again began a rise yesterday, and it is expected to reach the flood stage of 30 feet before it crests.

W.D Black, who for three years has conducted an automobile service between Cape Girardeau and Jackson, initiates a regular service between this city and Illmo and Edna; cars leave the St. Charles Hotel at 7:30 a.m. and 1 to 1:30 p.m., and returning leave the Jones and Hollenbeck drug stores in Illmo and Edna at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 to 5 p.m.; the fare is 75 cents each way.
