Contingency plans have been made for the Cape Girardeau County Commission and the cities of Cape Girardeau and Jackson to jointly issue no-burn orders, if fire officials determine such action is necessary to prevent the spread of fires during this hot, dry period; such an order also would ban the use of fireworks throughout the county.

Several area skateboarders want the city of Cape Girardeau to provide a facility for their sport; they expect to present a petition and plan for their goal to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board next month.

1963

More than 12,000 people jammed the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport yesterday for the Fourth Annual Aviation Day; more than 20 local pilots were on hand to provide short sightseeing trips over Cape Girardeau; another main feature of the day was a parachute demonstration by members of Arkansas State College's Skydivers Club.

Roy Williams of Charleston, Mo., became the first district golfer to win the Cape Girardeau Invitational Tournament three times Sunday as he shot a 71 on the final 18 holes to finish with 139, one under par, at the Cape Girardeau Country Club.

County Physician E.R. Schoen, accompanied by Highway Patrol troopers Percy Little and Glenn Lampley, was called to the camp of some gypsies on the old gravel road south of the County Home to help deliver a baby; the new arrival was named John Cape Girardeau Miller; the gypsy camp is located in the timber lands belonging to the County Home and has been there for several weeks.

It is reported that Helen Metje, pitcher for Main Street in the Girls' Softball League, is in St. Louis trying out with a professional club.

1913

Charles F. Stone has been appointed Cape Girardeau's new health officer by the City Council; he will devote all his time to seeing that alleys, streets and other places within the city limits are kept sanitary and clean.

Mrs. Margie C. James, formerly of Cape Girardeau but for the last 12 years a resident of Los Angeles, is visiting Mrs. B.F. Allen on North Frederick Street; she'll be visiting friends and relatives in Missouri until August, when she will return to California.
