1988

The continuing drought is forcing some area peach growers to irrigate their orchards; without irrigation, they say, the peaches would be smaller; lack of moisture is nearing a critical stage, as the July and August harvest season approaches.

A line of thunderstorms, generated by a rare influx of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, pushes into Southeast Missouri early in that afternoon; unfortunately, the rainfall pattern is scattered, with some areas getting over an inch, while others receive one-half inch or less.

1963

Although wind gusts in yesterday afternoon's thunderstorm reached only a peak of 35 miles an hour, they were strong enough to wreck a fireworks stand across from Town Plaza Shopping Center on William Street; rainfall in the storm totaled .79 of an inch downtown and .68 of an inch at the airport; other parts of the county received 2 inches.

State College's three federal loans have been consolidated by the executive committee of the Board of Regents into a single $7,015,000 package, and the way was cleared for a possible $4,200,000 in additional loans for future campus construction; the consolidated loans funded construction of Dearmont Quadrangle, six dormitory units and a central dining center near North Sprigg Street, and two multi-story dormitories and a dining center to serve them in the "Home of the Birds."

1938

Three Civil War veterans left Cape Girardeau yesterday afternoon via Frisco train for the Gettysburg reunion; departing were L.D. Hatcher, 92, a Confederate veteran from Blytheville, Ark.; Joseph Briggs, 90, of Sikeston, Mo., and Franklin H. Holloway, 93, of Jackson.

An addition to the Cape Girardeau Public Library is being urged again by the Library Board, it being shown that the present quarters aren't sufficient to meet the constantly growing demand.

1913

Three great meetings close out the four-week Lincoln McConnell tabernacle campaign; despite the hot weather, large, enthusiastic crowds attend the services; in the evening, the crowd was so great, a side wall of the tabernacle is removed, so that those outside could enjoy the service.

The mercury shatters the century mark, reaching 101 at 3 in the afternoon.
