Nearly two months ago, one of the strongest tornadoes on record ripped a 17-mile path through part of Oklahoma, devastating the city of Moore. The tornado-ravaged town still faces a long recovery, and two local women are offering their help.

"Basically because we could not imagine waking up to nothing like these people did," said Toni Sandlin. "We are just aiming to do everything that we can."

Sandlin and her friend Stacy Jones, both of Cape Girardeau, are spurring an area donation effort through a fundraising event Saturday at Longshots Bar & Billiards. Dubbed "Scootin' For Moore," the event will kick off at 1 p.m. with a motorcycle and car show, including a burnout competition after judging, and a bikini carwash throughout the day.

"The event is aimed at motorcycle and car enthusiasts, people looking to have a good time for a great cause, and generous hearts everywhere," Sandlin said. "We don't care if you have a motorcycle or car, or if you show up on a lawn mower, we would just like everyone to come together to make this huge."

Saturday's events also will include a live auction and live musical entertainment provided by the Roger Palmer Band. The auction will begin around 5 p.m. Donated items to be auctioned off include Harley-Davidson collectibles, handmade blankets, home décor and gift cards from local retailers.

Additionally, Sandlin is asking for donations to help "stuff" a 24-foot moving truck. She and Jones will be making the 550-plus-mile haul to deliver all proceeds and donations to Moore, Okla., themselves Monday.

"I have been in close contact with the chamber of commerce in Moore and they have been keeping me updated as to what their immediate needs are," she said.

Appropriate items include household goods, nonperishable food, water, diapers, toilet paper and hygiene products, cleaning supplies, building supplies, clothing and shoes of all sizes, and "pretty much anything that an average person uses on a daily basis."

"We had it in our hearts that we had to help, so we are doing the best we can to do that."
