The first steel girder for the Route M bridge over the Burlington Northern and Cotton Belt railroad tracks near Rockview, Mo., was hoisted into place this week by Robinson Construction Co. of Perryville, Mo.; the bridge should open to traffic late this year or next summer.

Craig Horky and Loi Ha have opened the Billiard Center at 30 S. Park Ave.; the center includes eight regulation-sized pool tables in a 2,800-square-foot building; there also is one snooker table, as well as about 20 video and pinball machines.

1963

Cape State College will establish an extension center at the former Malden (Mo.) Air Station, if enrollment warrants the effort, says Dr. Mark F. Scully, president of the college; tentative plans call to offer late afternoon and evening classes in English, history and mathematics.

The city of Jackson appears to be on a sound financial basis and possibly in the best financial shape at midyear in many years; the balance of cash available July 1 was $340,386.82, the highest balance ever at midyear for Jackson.

1938

A new application for a street improvement project in Cape Girardeau was sent by the city to the WPA at Farmington, Mo., yesterday; it is on a citywide basis and calls for paving of streets with asphaltic concrete, a high-class blacktopping material.

According to post commander Joe Woods, the Lacey Tyler Post No. 252, American Legion of Cape Girardeau will hold a public picnic on Aug. 4 at Fairground Park; a ballgame will be arranged for the afternoon, and a free dance will be conducted in the evening on the tennis courts.

1913

John Jones of Whitewater, a veteran of the Civil War, passed through here yesterday on his way to visit his parents, who he has not seen for 40 years; they live near Kansas City; his father is 101 years old, and his mother is 96.

Newly-made attorney James A. Barks, for three years principal of the Hancock School in St. Louis County, is contemplating moving to Cape Girardeau; he is here visiting his cousin, Mrs. Henry Caruthers.
