Old Town Cape announced in a news release that it brought home three state-level awards from the Missouri Main Street Conference in Kansas City, Mo.

The Cape Riverfront Market was named the 2013 Top Special Event by the Missouri Main Street Organization. The category recognized successful events that attracted new visitors to downtown and involves families, with emphasis on downtown as the centerpiece of the community, according to the release.

The Broadway Corridor Project won Missouri Main Street's Streetscape and Public Improvements award. The award category recognized streetscape and public space improvements, including landscaping, street furniture, interpretive signage, way-finding signage and lighting, the release said.

Lastly, Old Town Cape received Missouri Main Street's Greatest Achievement award, which, according to the news release, "recognizes an exceptional downtown management organization that provides financial stability to the revitalization effort, exhibits leadership skills that generate design improvements, promotions and events that highlight the area's culture and history, shares historic preservation resources, generates economic growth for the downtown and works with the city and other public partners to accomplish downtown goals."

Alliance Water Resources commits to veterans program

Alliance Water Resources pledged its commitment to the Show-Me Heroes Program when president Dale Wagner signed a pledge July 16, according to a news release from Alliance.

The Show-Me Heroes initiative was launched in 2010 by Gov. Jay Nixon as part of the larger Missouri Works program, according to the news release. It is designed to help Missouri veterans and members of the National Guard and Reserve find jobs when they return home from duty.

Alliance's pledge signifies its "commitment to reach out to Missouri's veterans and members of the National Guard and Reserves in order to employ them for openings in which they are effectively matched, while providing increased employment interview occasions and enhanced hiring opportunities," the news release said.

Veterans possess a degree of training, education, motivation and character that is good for Missouri, said veterans' representative Mike Brown in the release. "With the influx of veterans returning from their service in the midst of a poor hiring market, this program opens doors and creates opportunities for both veterans and employers."

Alliance human resources manager Kent Dunwoody said in the release, "Positions in our company require a unique skill set, which many of our veterans have. They are team-oriented, big-picture thinkers, and they are just the type of employees we are looking for."
