Sunset Hills weighs urban deer hunting

SUNSET HILLS, Mo. -- A St. Louis County town may allow limited bow hunting in an effort to reduce the growing deer population.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunset Hills aldermen have given preliminary approval to the plan. A final vote will be at the next board meeting.

City Collector Mike Sawicki, who led the committee that set up the deer control policy and hunting regulations, said Sunset Hills has a "severe" deer problem. He said the deer create safety and ecological concerns.

The plan would allow the use of a bow during the hunting season that runs Sept. 15 through Nov. 15 and Nov. 27 to Jan. 15. Hunters would be required to agree to several regulations.
