1988

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the opening of the new foot bridge in Shawnee Park; during the ceremony, Cape Area Youth Soccer Association president Barry Zerbe presents a check in the amount of $9,000 to the city for the association's participation in the bridge construction.

A Cape Girardeau woman escapes serious injury when she is grazed on the left elbow and back by the lead diesel locomotive of a Burlington Northern freight train; the incident occurs in the 100 block of Water Street.

1963

The oldest bank in Cape Girardeau County, Cape County Savings Bank at Jackson, observes its 75th anniversary; the bank celebrates the milestone with gifts for customers and other visitors; the bank was organized May 15, 1888.

Missouri Gov. John M. Dalton has accepted an invitation to appear at the ribbon-cutting ceremonies Sept. 8 for the completed section of Interstate 55, running from Scott City to Fruitland.

1938

Petitions protesting removal under the zoning act of all building restrictions on Broadway from Henderson Avenue west are filed in the office of the city clerk; a delegation of property owners plans to appear before the city council Friday; under the plan, zoning prohibitions would also be lifted on Sprigg Street south from Morgan Oak Street and on Independence Street from Henderson Avenue west.

Razing of Grace Methodist cottage on Sprigg Street, the oldest church structure in Cape Girardeau, is begun by L.A. Mudd, who bought the building for the materials.

1913

The Boy Scouts, who are enjoying themselves at Camp Kelso, near Burfordville, are being visited by many Cape Girardeau people daily; the boys are having the best time of their lives, fishing and swimming in Whitewater River; along with recreation, the boys are treated to talks from prominent local men on how to better themselves.

Another fine new apartment house will be started next week; Theodore Ochs is clearing away the shed that was on the lot just south of the telephone property on Ellis Street, between Broadway and Themis Street, and will build a two-story, six-apartment building on the site.
