Bank of Missouri announces winners of business contest

Rob and Joan Stephens of Heartland Custom Flooring in Cape Girardeau and Mary Miller, owner of REM Legacy LLC/Living Hope Organizer in Jackson, won The Bank of Missouri's second annual Jumpstart Your Business contest, according to a news release from the bank.

The contest was aimed at small businesses and entrepreneurs who want to start a business or expand an existing business. The bank gave away two $1,000 cash prizes to be used for the winner's business endeavors, Caitlin Schlichting, the bank's online marketing specialist, said in the release.

To enter, for-profit small businesses operating in Southeast Missouri were required to meet certain criteria, which included meeting with a representative of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center in Cape Girardeau or the Perry County Economic Development Authority. A panel of five individuals judged contest entries.

Faith-based counseling center opens in Cape Girardeau

One-Accord Counseling, a faith-based counseling center, is now open at 1200 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, according to a news release from owner Elizabeth Statler, MSW, LCSW.

Statler is a board-certified professional Christian counselor at the center, which specializes in traditional and faith-based counseling for children, adolescents and adults, the release said. Marital, family and individual counseling also are available.

Men's seminar presented by Saint Francis hospital

A seminar presented by Vincenzo Galati, DO, FACS, urologist at Saint Francis Medical Center, will focus on two health issues commonly found in men, according to a news release from account services coordinator Emily Sikes.

Galati will discuss symptoms and treatment options for enlarged prostate and erectile dysfunction, the release said.

The seminar will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at Isle Casino Cape Girardeau. The event is free and open to the public, and food and beverages will be provided.

Robinson recognized as a top contractor in Midwest

Robinson Construction Co. of Perryville, Mo., was recognized by the Engineering News-Record as one of the top contractors in the Midwest, according to a news release from Kelly Garza of Robinson Construction.

ENR is a magazine that provides news and analysis for the worldwide construction industry, the release said. ENR performs annual surveys of the largest contractors and design firms in the U.S. and internationally and ranks them based on annual revenue.

Based on 2012 revenue for work completed in the Midwest, Robinson ranked No. 87 on the ENR Midwest Top Contractors list for 2013, the release said.

CVS Pharmacy construction on schedule

The construction of CVS Pharmacy, at the intersection of William Street and South Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, is on schedule, and the pharmacy is scheduled to open in January, according to Mike DeAngelis, director of public relations for CVS.

First Midwest Bank opens Cape Girardeau location

First Midwest Bank will open a temporary trailer banking location on Sept. 9 at 1820 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, where a permanent location will be built, according to Ron Cooper, BFA compliance officer at the First Midwest Bank home office in Dexter, Mo. The bank also has locations in Jackson, Sikeston, Mo., and Dudley, Mo.

Auto Tire and Parts expands to Bunny Bread building

Greg Stroup of Auto Tire and Parts, 212 S. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, confirmed the expansion of its current facility to include the old Bunny Bread facility at William and Christine streets, which is behind Auto Tire and Parts. The business is developing the building for an expansion of its warehouse, Stroup said.

The Men's Room now open in Cape Girardeau

The Men's Room, a barbershop and spa facility, opened Aug. 26 at 705 William St. in Cape Girardeau.

The facility offers full-service barbering and has a sauna, steam room, therapeutic pool and lounge.

The owner of The Men's Room, Steven R. Johnson, said the business has as its mission statement "to provide clients with the most prestigious barbering and therapeutic services. Our goal at The Men's Room is to excel with precision grooming and use of state-of-the-art equipment and to offer a clean, relaxed environment."

"It's not the typical barbershop," Johnson said.

The Men's Room is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Business class offered to dislocated workers

The University of Missouri Extension of Cape Girardeau with Missouri Small Business Technology and Development Centers are offering a course to help recently dislocated workers learn how to become their own boss, according to a news release from Richard Proffer, business development specialist for the MU Extension Office in Cape Girardeau.

"This course is a great way to see if opening a business is what you want to do," Proffer said in the release. "In this course, we will cover business ownership and planning, marketing, financing and other important topics."

"How to Start a Business in Missouri" will be at 9 a.m. Sept. 30 at the Workforce Investment Board, 760 S. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, the release said.

The class is offered to recently dislocated workers at no charge, according to the release. To qualify for free admission, attendees must register at the local Missouri Career Center. Admission is $40 for individuals who are not recently dislocated workers but would still like to attend the class.

To register, call 243-3581. Seating is limited to fifteen. More opportunities for the class will be added as needed, and a minimum of four participants is required to have the class.

Robinson recognized for client service

H & R Block Inc., the nation's largest tax preparation services company, recently honored 25 local tax professionals and their client service leaders with the company's top national client service award. Teresa Robinson of Cape Girardeau was among 25 professionals recognized out of approximately 90,000 tax associates with the company's Henry W. Bloch Award for Excellence in Client Service award. Robinson was among the professionals who were invited to the company's world headquarters in Kansas City, Mo., to receive the award.

Local surgeon performs advanced ankle surgery

Dr. R. August Ritter III, an orthopedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopedic Specialists in Cape Girardeau, has become certified in highly advanced total ankle arthroplasty procedures using a new surgical technique with proven technology. After attending an training session in Henderson, Nev., Ritter is trained in the Trabecular Metal Total Ankle technique, which can provide a dependable, durable, high-quality alternative to an ankle fusion procedure.

McPheeters joins MRV Banks

Steve McPheeters has joined MRV Banks as a senior vice president at the Cape Girardeau location at 1610 N. Kingshighway. Before joining MRV Banks, McPheeters served as community bank president at First State Bank & Trust in Sikeston, Mo.; worked at Noranda Aluminum as superintendent and manager of St. Jude Industrial Park; served as executive director of the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce in the mid-1990s; and worked for Bank of Sikeston and AmerFirst Banks of Sikeston and Cape Girardeau.

Squires new customer service manager

Keegan Squires has been promoted to customer service manager at Elite Travel in Cape Girardeau. Squires' promotion was in part due to his dedication to maintaining the highest level of customer satisfaction. Squires graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor of science in criminal justice, with special emphasis on sales management and psychology.
