Amid pomp and circumstance, President Ronald Reagan visits Cape Girardeau, marking only the second visit by an incumbent president in the city's history, the first being President William Howard Taft in 1909; Air Force One arrives at the airport here at 11:35 a.m., and a 25-car motorcade whisks Reagan, Rep. Bill Emerson and Sens. John Danforth and Christopher Bond to the Show Me Center; campaigning for Vice President George Bush, Reagan attacks Democratic leadership as a "Nightmare on Elm Street."

Before the grandstand in the evening at the SEMO District Fair is the second performance of the Trans-World Auto Daredevils; the group performed last night to the best crowd for any show so far at this year's fair, and the best for any Friday since 1958.

THEBES, Ill. -- Construction has begun on two major projects here; drilling of a deep well, part of a water-improvement project, was started last week; pouring of cement for a boat ramp into the Mississippi River, being built by the Illinois Department of Conservation, began this week.

1938

The thefts of seven automobiles here, one in Sikeston, Mo., and in Illinois are solved with the arrest of five Cape Girardeau boys, ranging in age from 15 to 18 years; the boys allegedly took the machines "just to be doing it"; Girardeans who have been victims of the youths are Jake Pollack, Andy Juden, Al Brinkopf, William Deevers, R.E.L. Lamkin, A.W. Barr, and Norman Hely.

JEFFERSON CITY -- Gov. Lloyd C. Stark appoints Raymond B. Lucas, an attorney of Benton, Mo., to the State Supreme Court; he fills a vacancy caused by the death of Judge William F. Frank last week; Lucas, a Democrat, will serve until Jan. 1, 1939; a successor to Frank will be elected for a full, 10-year term in November.

1913

The Rev. W.B. Hays, presiding elder of the Charleston District, preaches at the services at Centenary Methodist Church; this is his last visit as presiding elder, as he is retiring from this district; he will go to Little Rock, Ark., to become editor of one of the church newspapers.

Leo Brennecke and family, who have been living in St. Louis the past few months, where Mr. Brennecke had been working in a wholesale house, have returned to Cape Girardeau to make their home.
