Wehrenberg marks National Movie Month

October is National Movie Month, and Wehrenberg Theatres is celebrating. Guests who are registered in Wehrenberg Theatres' Movie Viewer Program can look forward to a free movie Oct. 15 at any participating location. Every Monday in October, guests can get into any evening movie at a matinee price. The pumpkin carving contest will be at all Wehrenberg Theatres again. The top vote-getting pumpkin at each location will garner a year's worth of movies. Wehrenberg Theatres operates 15 theaters in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota, including Cape West 14 Cine.

Goeke, Yount present faculty recital Oct. 10

Tenor Christopher Goeke, professor of voice and opera at Southeast Missouri State University, will perform with Matt Yount on piano at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. Geoke and Yount will be accompanied by Gabrielle Baffoni on clarinet and Paul Kipper on accordion. Tickets for the one-hour performance may be bought at the River Campus box office in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Fountain St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, by calling 651-2265, or online at RiverCampusEvents.com.

Museum to discuss building art collection

The Crisp Museum will host a panel discussion at 6 p.m. Oct. 10 titled "Building an Art Collection: Corporate, Museum and Private Collections," at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. It will provide insight into the world of art collecting from many viewpoints. Panelists will include: Shelley Hagen, curator of the Wells Fargo Collection; Peter Nguyen, director of Crisp Museum; Sarah Riley, professor of art at Southeast and art collector, and Greig Thompson, principal of Thompson Fine Art Services in Harrisburg, Mo. Dance St. Louis brings 'New Dance Horizons II'

The 2013-2014 Southeast Missouri State University River Campus Touring Series starts with "New Dance Horizons II" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Bedell Performance Hall. This Dance St. Louis production features four world premieres from Madco, Saint Louis Ballet, Common Thread Contemporary Dance Co. and Leverage Dance Theatre. Dance St. Louis is a not-for-profit organization and one of the oldest and most respected dance presenters in the United States. Halloween Science Night set at Southeast

Children and parents are encouraged to attend Halloween Science Night from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 20, offered by the Office of Extended and Continuing Education and the College of Science, Technology and Agriculture at Southeast Missouri State University. Using a "trick-or-treating" style, children are encouraged to visit various rooms and buildings on the campus to experience exciting Halloween activities. Youngsters are encouraged to come dressed in Halloween costumes. Registration is required for children and adults at semo.edu/continuinged/hsn.htm.

Symphony to present Gala Season Opener

The Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra will present its Gala Season Opening Concert at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The concert will feature virtuoso cellist Patrice Jackson as soloist. It will present music from the Baroque era to today, including the masterpiece "Night on Bald Mountain," just in time for Halloween. Sara Edgerton, Department of Music faculty member, will conduct. Scary storytelling at Bollinger Mill

Bollinger Mill State Historic Site in Bufordville will hold its annual Halloween storytelling event at 7 p.m. Oct. 18. Marilyn Kinsella returns to tell her stories around a bonfire. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 243-4591.
