Police detective Kenton Martin is injured and four people are taken into custody after a fracas at Good Hope and Lorimier streets in the evening; a crowd estimated at up to 40 people gathers about 9 p.m. as police attempt to arrest a person suspected of property damage; after the altercation, Martin receives four stitches at a local hospital and is released.

The Cape Girardeau Chambers' refusal to join the Regional Commerce and Growth Association prompted a decision by key RCGA leaders to form a new chamber; this explanation was offered by leaders of the Cape Girardeau Centre Chamber of Commerce after last week's criticism of the new chamber by Cape Chamber officials.

Plans for the new "Cape Rock Quarterly" are revealed during the program of the Cape Girardeau Writers' Guild; Dr. Peter Hilty of the State College English faculty, editor of the quarterly, says the first issue of the new periodical will be published early in January.

A field fire on the Robert Penrod farm west of Fruitland burns more than 20 acres, catches a barn on fire and threatens another barn and the house; members of the Defense Volunteer Fire Department and other volunteers are able to control the fire and stop its spread.

1938

Fruitland Consolidated School District voters will ballot Nov. 15 on a proposal to issue bonds in the sum of $7,000 to build an auditorium and a central grade school at Fruitland; it is proposed to transport all grade school children in the district to the central school, which will eliminate the Leemon and Sawyer schools and possibly one other.

The Guernsey herd of dairy cattle at Springdale Farm, owned by Judge I.R. Kelso, has been sold to the Schonhoff Dairy.

1913

The special election to provide bonds in the sum of $125,000 for two new school buildings and the improvement of Lincoln School will be held tomorrow; the need for new classrooms in Cape Girardeau's overcrowded schools is great.

Members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will hold an entertainment Nov. 26 at the Opera House, the proceeds from which will go to complete the Lorimier Cemetery memorial gate fund.
