Eleven show interest in Cape positions

Eleven people have shown interest in running for an elected position in Cape Girardeau's city government, although as of Wednesday only three had so far officially filed as candidates for the April 8 election.

To file, a petition has to be turned in to city hall with 50 signatures of registered voters from a candidate's respective ward. The office of mayor, along with seats on the city council in wards 1, 2 and 6, will be on the ballot in April.

Mayor Harry Rediger has filed for re-election, along with Ward 6 Councilman Wayne Bowen. Joseph Uzoaru has filed as a candidate in Ward 1. No incumbents are running in Ward 1 or 2. Councilman John Voss, who represents Ward 1, will be term-limited in April, and Ward 2 Councilwoman Meg Davis has said she will not seek re-election because she is moving out of the ward.

People who have picked up petitions from city hall but have not yet returned them to file as candidates are Walter White for mayor, Teresa Robinson for Ward 1, and six people for Ward 2: Andrew Bard, Rocky Everett, Donald H. Howard Jr., Seth Keith, Gelanie Lockhart and Shelly Moore.

Filing opened Oct. 22 and closes Nov. 19. If more than two people gather enough signatures to run for the offices set to be decided in April, a primary election will be Feb. 4.
