MALDEN, Mo. -- A second consecutive upset wasn't in the cards for the Scott City Rams.

Unable to stop the Malden Green Wave's offense on any of their first seven possessions, the Rams saw their season come to a close with a 62-16 loss in the Class 2 District 1 semifinal round.

"We didn't answer the bell," Scott City coach Jim May said. "I don't know if was the weather or what it was, but Malden came out to play. We didn't, and when you don't it shows."

Sixth-seeded Scott City, which knocked off No. 3 seed Charleston last Thursday, did not earn a first down until their final drive of the first half while the Green Wave took advantage of their rushing attack to go up 34-0 after the first quarter.

A 25-yard run by Nick Thompson and a 46-yard by Dremond Robinson pushed No. 2 Malden ahead 16-0 in the first quarter.

Both backs added another touchdown in the quarter while all four two-point conversions put the Green Wave in position to have a running clock in the second half before well before the break.

Another 24 points scored in the second quarter ensured the rout, while the Rams outscored Malden, which played reserves, 16-6 after the half.

"They're a quality team," May said of Malden. "We're young and learning, but that wasn't the performance I was hoping for."
