Central High will present ‘Millie'

Arts Council accepting award nominations

Nomination forms for the 2013 Otto F. Dingeldein and Friend of the Arts awards are available through the Southeast Missouri Arts Council, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. Deadline for submissions is Dec. 10. The Dingeldein Award honors living individuals whose artistic achievements have made an impact on the cultural enrichment of the Cape Girardeau community. The award can be given to artists, nonartists or organizations. The Friend of the Arts Award is one of the highest honors the Arts Council can bestow. Nominees are involved with the Arts Council in a capacity that helps the organization achieve its goals for programming and outreach. Recipients of these awards will be named at the Dingeldein Gala from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 3. To download a nomination form for either award, visit capearts.org. Happy Slapowitz Bash to help Toys for Tots

The 12th annual Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash will be Dec. 12 in downtown Cape Girardeau. This year's event will feature nine bands at eight venues with food provided by Smokin Brothers BBQ. The event is the largest local toy drive for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Admission to the event is $10 or a new toy, and provides entrance to all venues all night long. T-shirts also can be bought beginning Nov. 20 at smokinbrothers.com/toybash and worn the night of the event for admission. Smokin Brothers BBQ will begin serving food at 6 p.m., with entertainment beginning at 8 p.m. The participating venues are Rude Dog Pub, The Pour House, The Library, Lodos, HotShots, Mixing 10, Bel Air and That One Bar; bands are Mike Renick Band, Us Instead, Headley Grange, Old School Hype, The Intention, Human Zoo, Tone Def All-Stars, Isabella and Bruce Zimmerman. Crisp Museum to host Photo Family Day

The Crisp Museum at Southeast Missouri State University will host an afternoon of activities inspired by photographic art from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 16. This event is free for all ages. Those at Photography Family Day will learn photography tips from knowledgeable guest speakers, view a historic camera collection and visit the newly acquired collection of Andy Warhol photographs. Hands-on activities will include photo developing techniques, macro lens use, digiscoping and photo-based digital art. The museum is in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast's River Campus. Trio to play ‘Music for Traverso and Theorbo'

Musicians Jeffrey Noonan, Doug Worthen and Stephanie Hunt are collaborating to perform "Music for Traverso and Theorbo" at 3 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus as part of the fall semester's Faculty and Guest Recitals. "The audience will have the chance to hear some baroque music that is very seldom performed in our area," said Noonan, professor of music at Southeast. "Of special note, Douglas Worthen performs on an original flute, constructed in the mid-18th century. The instrument is made of ivory and is one of only a handful of original instruments still playable today." Tickets may be bought at the River Campus box office in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Guitar Ensemble to perform in recital hall

The Southeast Guitar Ensemble will perform its "Fall Guitar Ensemble" concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The concert will be by guitar performance majors who work year-round as soloists, and most will attend graduate school after completing their undergraduate degrees at Southeast.
