The Leopold boys basketball team took a four-point lead over Perryville into halftime at the weather-delayed Woodland Tournament on Wednesday.

The Wildcats made a couple changes at halftime before running away with a 56-34 win.

"We changed our defense up a little bit," Leopold coach Andy Beck said. "We threw in some man-to-man, which most teams don't see us do very often. That kind of flustered them a little bit. We got after their guards. They put on a press there late in the third, and we got easy layups out of it. We ran two different press breaks and just got wide-open layups where nobody was inside the 3-point line. That kind of got us some easy buckets and got us a bit of a lead there."

It was the second consecutive title for Leopold at the tournament.

"Well, the defense showed up finally," Beck said. "They weren't there the other night I don't think against Oak Ridge very well. But tonight we really talked about it in the shootaround today. We really talked about it beforehand, just getting in the passing lane and getting after loose balls and things like that. Our defense was great tonight. That was the big difference."

Beck said his team, which lost seven seniors last season, wanted to make a point at the tournament.

"It really means a lot. ... They got the third seed, and we really think we were better than the third seed," Beck said. "They had that to prove all week. They've been talking about it. You never know with the weather the way it is how they're going to come out, but they were ready. They had something to prove. They had a chip on their shoulder to prove that they weren't the three seed, and to prove that they're still a good team without those seniors we had last year."

Senior Cameron Davis led Leopold, which missed 14 free throws in the game, with 21 points. Sophomore Zach Beel had 16 points and 14 rebounds, 10 of which came on the defensive side.

Woodland 51, Oak Ridge 48

The Woodland boys basketball team watched its eight-point lead disappear in the fourth quarter of the third-place game at the Woodland Invitational.

The Cardinals trailed by three points with .7 seconds left on the clock when Devon Gramlisch sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime and eventually allow Woodland to win 51-48.

"He's got the capabilities of shooting," Woodland coach Scot Davis said of Gramlisch. "He's got a good 15-foot range, but at the same time he was the safety option. I told him, I said, 'Listen. You pop out there, no one's going to guard you.' He hasn't shot a 3 all year, so I just said, 'Hey, just cut out there. If you catch it, just turn around and shoot it. He did, and it rattled in."

It was the second game in a row Oak Ridge saw a win disappear with a last-second shot. Leopold's Parker Brown hit a 3 with less than 10 seconds to go to give his team a victory over the Blue Jays in the semifinals.

For Woodland, it was ultimately a successful attempt to close out a game after a chance to defeat Perryville in the semifinals was lost late.

"It means that that we have the capability to win games when it comes down to the end," Davis said. "I think that's one of the biggest things. Being able to play well for three quarters is good and everything, but being about to close those things out -- we didn't close it out in the third quarter. We really didn't. We were outscored at one time by 11 in the fourth quarter. We just got that .7 seconds 3-pointer up, and we grew up in overtime it seemed like."
