The county collector's Cape Girardeau branch office at the Common Pleas Courthouse will be closed next year because there is no longer a provision for it in the state statutes.

Gary M. Arnold, 2260 Sherwood Drive, and Lawrence E. Mathenia, 138 Camelia Drive, take first-place trophies in the Home and Lawn Decoration Contest sponsored by the Retail Division of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce; winning the trophy for business decorations is Haman's Funeral Home, 107 S. Sprigg St.

During the noon hour, just after the old and new county officials file out of the courtroom at the Jackson courthouse, a big slab of ceiling plaster drops; the patch is 4 by 8 feet, and the falling plaster scratches pits in a table and some chairs, and knocks holes in the open County Court minute book.

Martha Smude, Common Pleas Court clerk-elect, says she will name Ruby Walters as her deputy; the two will swap chairs Monday, as Smude has been serving as Walters' deputy.

1913

W.O. Baumgardner of Fornfelt was accidentally shot with a blank cartridge by his young son, who was playing with a toy pistol; he had to go to a doctor to get the powder picked from his face; also at Fornfelt, while George Hahn's boy, Buch, was celebrating Christmas, a cannon cracker went off in his hand; he was severely burned.

A progressive dinner party stirs things up for the young society crowd; a string of autos about a mile long carries the party from one home to another.
