1964

With a 27-minute power outage silencing Central High School's automatic bell system yesterday afternoon, principal Fred M. Wilferth walked the halls ringing a bell to herald the change in classes; the source of the fair-weather outage was the viaduct substation south of the city.

Jackson residents apparently will vote in March on a $475,000 bond issue proposal to establish a branch factory here for the Lee Rowan Co. of St. Louis; at last night's Jackson Chamber of Commerce banquet, it was announced the bond issue had been approved at the state level, and Mayor Larry Nowak pledged to bring the issue before the city council to set the election date.

1939

Having been gone since Jan. 2, in which they traveled 5,600 miles, four Cape Girardeau men -- Frank and Paul Hahn, Paul Glueck and Leo Stock -- have returned home; the quartet traveled through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California; in the course of their trip, they also visited Tijuana, Old Mexico.

Everett Brown, who for 16 years has been a linotype operator for the Southeast Missourian, has gone to Jeanerette, La., where he will establish a weekly newspaper.

1914

Trouble is brewing between union barbers of Cape Girardeau and employers over new contracts; barbers are now paid 60 cents of every dollar they receive, their employers getting the other 40 cents; a guarantee of $12 per week is also exacted by barbers; a new contract calls for a guarantee of $13 per week and a rate of 65 cents on the dollar.

Henry L. Rozier returns to his Ste. Genevieve, Mo., home, after spending a few days in Cape Girardeau on business and visiting his daughters.
