Unless there is a drastic change to colder weather in the next day-and-a-half, which seems unlikely, January 1989 will go down in the history books as the second-warmest January in Cape Girardeau in 44 years; the average monthly temperature for this month has been 40.8 degrees.

Dr. John Koch, small-animal practitioner in Cape Girardeau, has been elected president of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association; Dr. Nelson L. Stone, mixed-animal practitioner of Jackson, has been elected secretary-treasurer for the MVMA.

1964

The Missouri Utilities Co. is installing ornamental concrete poles on Kingshighway as part of the new whiteway system there; the company and the state will install 130 poles along the 3.4-mile section of U.S. 61 at an estimated cost of $77,000.

Final approval is given a $673,317 budget for Cape Girardeau County by the County Court in the morning; in other business, the court discusses clearing brush on the county farm.

1939

S. Russell Vandivort, a Cape Girardeau lawyer, is announced as an assistant United States district attorney by U.S. District Attorney Harry C. Blanton; he succeeds Marshall Craig of Charleston, Mo., who resigned.

Burglary attempts at seven Cape Girardeau businesses over the weekend netted only small loot, but there were nine window and door glasses smashed in the attempts; break-ins were at the Kroger store, Cape Coal Co., Standard Oil service station at Good Hope and Ellis streets, the Kempe service station at the same intersection, a Standard station at Sprigg Street and Jefferson Avenue, another Standard station at Middle and Morgan Oak streets, and Goza's service station at Good Hope and Middle streets.

The Daily Republican is hoping to raise a fund of $160 to pay for a worthy Cape Girardeau County boy's education in the agricultural college of the Normal School; the money will pay for his room and board, his incidental fees and his books.

The first real touch of winter comes to Cape Girardeau in the morning, when a drizzle turns into sleet and ice in the morning and then snow; a covering of an inch is plastered over the ground, street and walks.
