The Cape Centre Chamber of Commerce has called off a scheduled meeting Feb. 17 between representatives of that group and the executive board of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce to further discuss terms that might bring about a merger of the two organizations.

The proposed annexation of approximately two square miles of land east of Interstate 55 and northwest of Scott City will be on the April 4 ballot; that was assured yesterday, when Scott County Circuit Judge Tony Heckemeyer issued a declaratory judgment in favor of Scott City, which permits the issue to be put to a vote on the April ballot.

HAYTI, Mo. -- An explosion and fire levels the Uptown Lanes bowling alley shortly after midnight, fatally injuring an unidentified youth; the victim, about 20, is found under debris at the rear of the building.

Cape Girardeau's new Central Junior High School is tentatively scheduled for occupancy by 740 seventh- and eighth-grade pupils Feb. 17; the only thing that might alter that schedule is work in the cafeteria and kitchen.

The Cape Girardeau City Council has approved construction of a brick storage garage on the fire department-police department lot on Independence Street; the structure will be used by the city for storage.

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Between 50 and 100 farm families living in the southern end of the Birds Point-New Madrid Floodway are preparing to abandon their homes as a result of the Ohio River flood now moving toward Cairo, Ill.; a stage of 44 feet at Cairo sends backwater into the government's flood-control spillway at St. John's Bayou, north of New Madrid, Mo.

The Cape Girardeau School Board voted unanimously yesterday to employ architect W.E. Parlow of Cape Girardeau to draw the plans for the new Washington School and the enlargement of Lincoln School.

Whit Dodge and his crew of railroad carpenters are building a new depot at Nash; several years ago, the railroad company loaded the depot that stood at the junction of the main line and Hoxie, Ark., line of the Frisco on some flat cars and sent it to where they thought it was needed more; seems the officials figured wrong.
