I was reading article on the sports page about the 5-year-old who was driving the ATV. Bad, bad article. It should be stressing, telling how many kids got injured on it or killed. I think that these type articles should not be on the papers. After 9/11/2011, America was the most united since Pearl Harbor of World War II. ...

Divided country

After 9/11/2011, America was the most united since Pearl Harbor of World War II. All Americans pulled together as one, no matter the political party or personal beliefs. Seven short years later, beginning in 2008, America became the most divided since the Civil War of the 1860s. What, or who, caused this division of America?

Norman Burroughs

What is the problem? Norman Mailer once said of William S. Burroughs that he may have been the only novelist of his time truly possessed of genius. A native of St. Louis, the multitalented Burroughs is perhaps best known for his novel, "Naked Lunch." He was in the forefront of the 1950s Beat Generation and a major influence on literary and other artistic figures of his time. A new, perhaps definitive biography of Burroughs has been published. Burroughs received a multitude of tributes during and after his lifetime but, for beyond baffling reasons, has yet to be afforded a spot on the wall of famous Missourians in downtown Cape.

Wasteful Missouri

They had to spend time to put Rush's bust in the capital. Now they are at it again. Wasting money to try to change the Missouri flag. It should not be changed. It is our history. They should be helping people to get jobs, health insurance, food and housing as well as education and many other things. But that would be work, which they don't have time for.

Lack of leadership

When looking back on the Obama presidency, historians will note that the president is completely lacking in leadership ability. He can only give the appearance of leadership when everyone agrees with him. This occurred during his first two years in office when the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress. When control of the House went to the Republicans, Obama's lack of leadership ability showed up vividly, and we have had gridlock ever since. He blames it all on the Republicans, and the accommodating liberal media allows him to get away with it, but the truth is other presidents have had to deal with a divided Congress, and we have never had this type of gridlock.

Common Core

Regarding the caller who implies that those opposing Common Core standards must be seven tea party people: Anyone who has truly researched this in-depth would not be in favor of its implementation in any school. This area just happens to have some actively concerned parents who aren't going to stand for this government takeover that is potentially harmful to the children's education, privacy and morals. More citizens need to be aware of what this set of standards has done in other states and fight it all the way.

Open session

The city manager said nobody came to the podium to speak during open session, meaning (to him) that people agreed with what the council is doing. Wrong. People don't speak up because the city council is going to do what they want, no matter what is said.

Parking on campus

I had a hard time figuring out why multiple students with these expensive parking passes keep their cars parked in front of my house for days on end. Now I know: because SEMO built new dorms off Broadway, and it's closer than parking across campus.
