Two Southeast field athletes earn weekly honors

Southeast Missouri State's Blake Smith and Kayla Gutierrez earned Ohio Valley Conference Male and Female Field Athletes of the Week honors.

Smith, a Jackson High School graduate, was named the OVC co-Male Field Athlete of the Week with Eastern Illinois' Peter Gerarghty.

Smith won the long jump at Southeast's Redhawks Invitational on Friday. His jump of 25 feet, 4 inches is first in the OVC and ninth in the nation.

Gutierrez was named the OVC Female Field Athlete of the Week. Her throw of 65 feet, 7 inches, which ranks first in the OVC, won the weight throw at the Redhawks Invitational and broke a school record.

Southeast competes at the OVC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.
