A major winter storm struck Missouri over the weekend, dumping up to 14 inches of snow in some sections; several thousand customers of Central Illinois Public Service were without power and heat when ice, wind and tree limbs downed power lines in extreme Southern Illinois; power was also off yesterday afternoon and evening in the Cape Girardeau area.

The weekend's icy weather turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Easter Seals Society telethon; the telethon locally raised $161,000.

Gerald L. Langston, a construction worker, became the 17th candidate for city commissioner, when he filed his petition earlier this week.

The State College Indians dump Colorado State College, 83-79, and Abilene Christian of Abilene, Texas, upsets the host school Lamar, 73-71, in the semifinal games of the Southwest NCAA Regional Basketball Tournament in Beaumont, Texas; the Indians will play Abilene Christian tomorrow night for the tournament title and the right to compete in the national small college tournament.

Overflowing highways and forcing creeks and small rivers from their banks, a torrential rainstorm swept Cape Girardeau and district Saturday night; in Cape Girardeau's vicinity, Cape LaCroix Creek made observers think the Mississippi River had changed course and had started running west of the city.

Ernest Foster is elected president of the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band for the 1939 concert season.

1914

All those new houses, and several of the old ones, in the Lorimier addition to the west end of Cape Girardeau will begin enjoying city carrier mail service March 15, if they comply with Uncle Sam's rules; residents must number their houses and provide receptacles on their front porches or have slots cut in their doors.

The steamer Clyde, of the Tennessee River Packet Co., passed up the Mississippi River about 4 p.m. yesterday, just a few hours after the government lighthouse tender boat, The Oleander, passed by to get the lights in shape for this season's river trade.
