Residents in Jackson and over most of Cape Girardeau County north of Delta are watching things dry out from the 7 1/4-inch rains of Saturday night, Sunday and yesterday.

Only a fair turnout is reported at the special bond election at Scott City, where city voters approve a $40,000 revenue bond issue and $137,000 in general obligation bonds to finance extension of sewer and water service to areas in the town that don't have sewers at present.

C. Andy Juden is considering construction of a business building on Spanish Street, north of Independence Street, with the structure possibly to be used as a small movie show house.

Mel Schwab of Cape Girardeau will leave Saturday for Abbeville, La., to go into spring training with that club in the Evangeline League; last season, Schwab played first base for the Fayette club of the Arkansas-Missouri League; he batted .314 and hit 14 home runs.

1914

Lucius P. Ruff, formerly a Cape Girardeau resident, perished in a fire that consumed the Missouri Athletic Club and the Boatmen's Bank in St. Louis early yesterday morning; he was a cousin to Dr. C.B. Ruff and a brother of Mrs. Edward S. Hoch of Chicago; his father was a well-known dentist, who practiced here many years and who died about 15 years ago.

O.J. Denton and W.E. Kelly, who have the contract to build a residence for John Wilhelm, northeast of the box factory, on Main Street in Fornfelt, began to lay the foundation yesterday; Julius Vasterling will build the store building for Wilhelm; it will adjoin the residence on the east.
