1989

Howard H. "Butch" Boyd Jr., who has been acting chief of police in Cape Girardeau since August, is given the position on a permanent basis; he was selected for the job from among 100 applicants.

Looking to the future, the majority of city council members say North Perryville Road will need to be improved and North Sprigg Street extended northward to connect with Lexington Avenue; but the members generally say they don't want those projects to delay the planned $3.4 million Lexington work, which would provide a needed arterial east-west street form Kingshighway to Highway 177.

1964

The field for city office in the March 24 primary election was widened Friday by six names, including three new candidates for mayor; the new mayoral candidates are Jack L. Priest, George L. Ventres and W.E. Walker; filing for commissioner were Betty Corns, Charles McNeil Jr. and Max G. Stovall.

Paul Ranson and Naemon Townsend of State College are named to the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association All-Star Basketball team; the two are joined by Ralph Farber of Rolla, Mo., Bud Vallino of Warrensburg, Mo., and Charles Marshall of Springfield, Mo.

1939

A suggestion that a full-time public health nurse be employed to look after the children in the rural schools of Cape Girardeau County will be submitted to the various school patrons at the annual school election April 4; a school nurse can be hired at a cost of about $1.50 per district.

1914

Fred Groves, agent for several standard automobiles, takes on the Saxon, which he believes will prove a wonder to this territory; the Saxon is a runabout with wire wheels and standard equipment in every respect; one of the auto experts who had a hand developing the car was H.W. Ford.

A troupe of Indians passing through here on the noon Frisco train causes quite a stir around the passenger station; the men are on their way to Birmingham, Ala., from Oklahoma; they are painted up as though they are on the warpath.
