John L. Hill Jr., 91, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Chaffee Nursing Center in Chaffee, Mo.

He was born Jan. 19, 1923, in Cape Girardeau, to John and Della Robinson Hill Sr. John and Virginia Ann Jungers were married Sept. 7, 1942. She preceded him in death.

John was a graduate of Central High School. John and Virginia owned and operated John Hill Jr. Electric in Cape Girardeau 40-plus years, and also co-owned East Cape Mobile Home Park in McClure, Ill., until the mid-1980s.

Dad worked hard, but also played hard. He enjoyed making others laugh at his expense. He was a member of Eagles Lodge and loved dancing in his flashing suit and shoes at the Eagles Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He would go for daily walks on the La Croix walking trail and had been known all over town as "the man with the flashing lights." John was a proud member of Independent Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) more than 70 years. He attended La Croix United Methodist Church. He was fun loving, full of life and lived life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed!

John is survived by a daughter, Gretchen (Charles) Proffer of Apex, N.C.; a son, John "Trea" (Tammy) Hill III of Thebes, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Stone-Hill of Frisco, Texas; a brother-in-law, Jim (Terri) Jungers; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; a son, Mark Allen Hill; a sister, Alma Lee Slinkard; and a brother-in-law, Jay W. Slinkard.

Instead of a viewing, Pop wanted a celebration of life and it will be from 1 to 4 p.m. April 20 at River Ridge Winery in Commerce, Mo.

A special thank you goes to all the fine people at the Chaffee Nursing Center for taking such great care of him as well as Pat Schwent with Saxy Jazz for her heartfelt performance.
