A simple offer to help launch a program to train child-care providers has spread across the nation; now, the person who offered that support six years ago, Grace Hoover, has been named the 1989 Friend of Children by the Area Licensed Providers Association.

Stanley, Dirnberger, Hopper and Associates, a recently founded accounting firm, has moved into a new, 8,500-square-foot building at 1441 Mount Auburn Road; certified public accountants with the firm are Gary Stanley, Don Hopper, Steven K. Dirnberger and Lisa Mills.

1964

Cape Girardeau voters yesterday uprooted three city government incumbents and voted in an almost completely new administration; falling before the voters' brooms in the near sweep are Mayor Walter H. Ford, Police Commissioner John L. Wieser and Park Commissioner J.W. McBride; the new mayor will be W.E. "Waddy" Davis, and new commissioners will be Harry A. Siemers, Al Nenninger and Dewey Hinton; only Commissioner John A. Hayden survived the house cleaning.

The proposed retirement fund for city policemen and firemen was completely snowed under in heavy Cape Girardeau voting yesterday, 5,462 opposed to 2,351 in favor.

1939

Although manager Mark Seyer of the Cape Tigers had the misfortune of having the index finger of his right hand stepped on by a horse at his home on U.S. 61, he says he will don mask and pads for his club in the game Sunday with Olive Branch, Ill.; the finger, while not being broken, was badly bruised.

After serving as local observer for the weather department of the Bureau of Agriculture for 19 years, John G. Putz of Jackson this week gave up the paraphernalia and records of the office, and the entire outfit was transferred to the municipal water and light plant.

1914

The one big surprise in yesterday's city council election was the selection of S. Edward Blumer in the first ward; other winners for council seats were Walter Black, A.C. Bowman, Clem B. Hoeller and William H. Medley.

A tremendous victory for larger and better schools was won by the people of Cape Girardeau on Tuesday, when they voted to increase the sales tax levy to $1 per $100 valuation of all property; that's an increase of 20 cents.
