The Arrow, Southeast Missouri State University's student newspaper, won two first-place awards and 10 others Saturday at the 2013 Missouri College Media Association convention at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., a university news release said.

The Arrow, a partnership between the university and Rust Communications, the parent company of the Southeast Missourian, placed second in the state in the Best Overall Newspaper for Division I.

Division I includes student newspapers at Lindenwood University, Missouri State University, Saint Louis University, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Missouri-St. Louis, University of Central Missouri and Washington University, the release said.

Awards, according to the release, include:

* First place, "website homepage;" overseen by editor Savanna Maue of Breese, Ill., and online managing editor Andrea Gils of Montevideo, Uruguay;

* First place, feature page, "Bird's Eye View;" photographer Drew Yount of Imperial, Mo., page designer Lauren Fox of Marshfield, Mo., and reporter Marissa Fawcett of O'Fallon, Mo.

* Second place, sports page; sports editor Jen Gradl of St. Louis for pages 2 and 3 of the Arrow's Sept. 11-17 edition, the release said.

* Third place, "In-Depth News Reporting" and "News Writing" for Gils' stories "Faculty Senate Prompts Study of Chairperson Retention" and "Close to 357 Salary Employees to See Raises," respectively.

* Third place, "Photo Page"; photo editor Alyssa Brewer and design editor Jami Black of St. Louis, "Upperclassmen Help with Move-In Day."

* Third place, "Sports Writing;" Gradl, "Student Raises Money to Aid Family in Australia."

* Four honorable mentions: designer Sarah Holstein of St. Louis for her ad "Retribution;" Ben Striker of St. Louis, in sports writing for "Southeast Football Player Delivers off the Field;" Gils, information graphics; and Michael Ryan of St. Louis, "Essential Apps Every College Student Needs."
