State Rep. Dennis Ziegenhorn, appearing before the Scott County Commission in Benton, Mo., announces the resignation of his father, Eldon Ziegenhorn, as first district commissioner because of ill health; the elder Ziegenhorn suffered a stroke last October.

More than a dozen officers from four law-enforcement agencies broke up fights and dispersed a crowd of about 300 people at a dance yesterday morning at the University Center on the Southeast Missouri State University Campus.

Fred M. Wilferth, who for five years has been principal of Central High School and who has been with the Cape Girardeau school system for 21 years, has resigned, effective at the end of the term; Wilferth he will return to the classroom to teach.

In a ceremony yesterday, a T-33 jet trainer was officially dedicated as part of Jackson City Park; the plane arrived in pieces two days ago and was assembled and put on display in the park; it was presented to the city by Col. M.A. Bailey, deputy commander of maintenance of the Blytheville Air Force Base, Ark.

Wayne Goddard, county play supervisor for the WPA, who is in charge of forming the Cape County Baseball League, says it appears the loop will be composed of at least 14 teams; teams from Commerce, Mo., Illmo and Jackson have asked admission into the league.

Howard Crowell, the 6-year-old son of Roy Crowell, is struck by an automobile on Bloomfield Street at Wilson Road while walking to Franklin School in the morning with other children, including an older brother; thrown to the pavement, Crowell sustains cuts above the mouth and nose, but isn't seriously injured.

1914

A new day is dawning for amateur baseball in the region; last night a new league -- the Southeast Missouri Baseball Association -- was formed at Sikeston, Mo.; the league, boasting teams from Cape Girardeau, Chaffee, Sikeston, New Madrid, Portageville and Caruthersville, will begin play about May 10.

Dr. Paul Vasterling and family are here from St. Louis visiting the A.C. Vasterling family; Dr. Vasterling is chief surgeon of the Missouri Pacific Railroad and has charge of the Mo-Pac hospital in St. Louis.
