Southeast Missouri State softball team suffers 12th consecutive loss

The Southeast Missouri State softball team's losing streak was extended to 12 games after the team dropped both games of a doubleheader against OVC opponent Tennessee Tech on Saturday at the Southeast Softball Complex.

The Redhawks (7-28, 2-15 OVC) had just two hits in a 3-0 loss in Game 1 and dropped a 5-3 decision in Game 2.

Keaira Schilling had a no-hitter going in Game 2 before Madi Taylor broke it up with a single to drive in a run during the fifth inning.

TTU (17-32, 9-11 OVC) added three more runs in the inning to take a 4-1 lead.

The Redhawks scored a run in the first inning when Renee Terry drove in Chelsea Smith with the bases loaded.

Southeast made an attempt at a comeback in the fifth inning when Leah Duffe singled down the left-field line with the bases loaded to score KC Saxe.

One batter later, Chelsea Smith singled to left to drive in Nicole Deering and cut the TTU lead to 4-3. After Deering scored, Haylee Krack tried to advance to third but was thrown out by the TTU left fielder, ending the Redhawks' late inning rally.

TTU added a run in the sixth when Gabby Perez singled to score Che Burgess, giving TTU a 5-3 lead.

Schilling (2-12) took the loss in the circle, allowing five earned runs. The Golden Eagles had three hits against Schilling in seven innings.

She walked four batters and struck out three.

Hannah Weaver (6-16) earned the win for TTU, giving up three earned runs on six hits.

Game 1 was all Golden Eagles.

Danielle Liberatore (10-10) pitched a shutout for TTU, allowing just three hits in seven innings.

Taylor collected two RBIs for the Golden Eagles.

In the third inning, Taylor launched a solo shot down the right-field line.

With a runner on third in the fourth inning, Taylor doubled to left field to score Perez, extending the lead to 2-0.

TTU added a run in the fifth inning.

Jamie Woodworth accounted for both the Redhawks' hits in the game -- singles in the first and third innings.

Southeast starter Aubrey Denno (3-8) took the loss, allowing one earned run and two hits over 2 1/3 innings. She walked four and struck out one.

The Redhawks resume play Wednesday with a doubleheader on the road against Saint Louis University.

Track and field

Rebekah Lawson kicked off Southeast Missouri State's track and field events this weekend by winning the 10,000-meter run Thursday at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kansas.

Lawson never trailed in the race and finished with a time 36 minutes, 10.68 seconds, the fastest time in the Ohio Valley Conference this season by 13 seconds.

Friday, the relay team of Alyssa Rebecca, Megan Parks, Mary Dohogne and Gloria Westlake took third in the 6,400-meter relay in 21:48.85.

On Saturday at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Ala., Kayla Gutierrez and Sarah Hall claimed second and third, respectively in the hammer throw. Gutierrez's throw of 196 feet, 2 inches broke the school record.

Bethany Pfeiffer's throw of 141-8 in the javelin was good for third place and Brian Grote took third in the men's javelin with a toss of 188-2.

Reggie Miller won the triple jump with a distance of 51-11 3/4 and tied for third place in the high jump with a height of 6-7 1/2. Chris Martin's jump of 50-3 1/4 in the triple jump put him in second.

The Redhawks compete at the Arkansas State Open on Friday and Saturday.

Basketball

Southeast senior Tyler Stone finished with a team-high 22 points in his final game in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Portsmouth, Va., on Saturday.

He was 8 of 17 from the field and made all six of his free throws, and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Stone averaged 13.7 points and six rebounds during three games.

He scored six points and had five rebounds during his team's loss on Friday and had 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks in his team's win on Wednesday.
