ALTENBURG, Mo. -- Continuing its observance of the church's 150th anniversary, Trinity Lutheran Church of Altenburg examines "The Expansion Years of 1864-87"; descendants of then-pastor J.F. Koestering are on hand to help lead the service.

1964

At a special session last night, the Jackson City Council passed an ordinance authorizing the city to purchase three lots for the expansion of the International Shoe Co. plant here for $39,000; the lots are on East Main Street and on George Street south of the present shoe plant.

The Cape Girardeau County Court decides to seek estimates on the cost of moving the old U.S. 61 bridge over the Diversion Channel, south of Cape Girardeau, to a location near Allenville; the State Highway Commission has offered to sell the bridge to the county for a token fee.

1939

The steamer Golden Eagle, piloted by Capt. William H. "Buck" Leyhe, reaches Cape Girardeau at 3:25 a.m., posting a winning time against the Delta King of the San Joaquin River and Delta Queen of Sacramento River, California; the Eagle made the trip from Vine Street in St. Louis to Broadway at Cape Girardeau in 9 hours 10 minutes, with an average speed of 13.8 miles an hour.

Eleven people are baptized in the afternoon at special services conducted at Juden Creek by the Assembly of God Church; revival services at the church are being conducted by the Rev. Gale Jackson.

1914

Ruth Gregory, representing the Murillo Studio in St. Louis, is here to open a branch studio in the Houck Building.

The block north from Jefferson Street between Pacific and Ellis streets has had its appearance completely altered; it was formerly one of the most unsightly blocks in town; the debris of the old brick kiln has been removed and the block graded for residences; Mr. Keller of Kansas City, son-in-law of Charles Gelvin, is having four brick buildings built facing Pacific on the west side of the block.
