Sun tax

Congratulations to Oklahoma for becoming the first state in the country to impose a sun tax. Yes, you read that right. Use renewable energy sources like solar power and pay for it.

NRA, Bloomberg

There is a difference between "gun safety" and "gun control." Gun safety is what the NRA does, not Bloomberg. Bloomberg is a nanny-state gun-control nut.

Pendarvis training

I was one of the students at the Leon Pendarvis master class held by SEMO's Theatre Department on Monday, and I would just like to say: He is one of the most amazing people I have ever met. He has so much experience and success under his belt, yet he still did the master class for us solely out of the goodness of his heart. He lives by a code of humility and goodness, which was evidenced by every bit of knowledge he imparted to us. He even went out of his way to tell us that if we should ever need his help, he would help us in any way he could. It was an extremely inspirational class, and I am grateful to the university for all of the effort it must have taken to bring in such a wonderful person.

Econ perspective

The president had the bad economy dumped on him six years ago. They have flung mud at him ever since. The natural business cycle has good times coming around soon. All of this time, durable as well as nondurable goods have been wearing out. So demand for goods is beginning to increase. In addition, this same economic flow may be seen from abroad due to globalism. In the case, Pakistan, India, China and Mexico saved their money and did not spend it with us. This means we need competitive companies to produce unique, hard-to-manufacture products to sell overseas.

Sales tax

The latest sales tax increase proposal by city officials is to have a vote on the issue in August of this year. Why August when it could be placed on the ballot three months later in November when a much larger number of citizens will be voting? Tax increase votes are almost always intentionally scheduled for low voter turnout elections. Public officials wanting to increase taxes are well aware that it is easier to get them passed when the general public voter turnout is low.

Right to farm

Thank you for publishing advocacy pieces for and against the so-called Right to Farm proposal. Now, will you please follow up and publish a truthful piece telling us what's really in the bill and the impact it will have?

Obama, ideologue

Isn't it enough for this ideologue president to destroy the U.S. economy, put people out of work and into welfare, and to use the IRS as his personal attack dogs against anybody who is a political opponent, but now he's going to pay the IRS scofflaws millions of dollars in bonuses to IRS employees who owe hundreds and hundreds of thousands of back taxes? Really? Where does this guy end?

Students' clothing

I do not have school- age children, but I am a taxpayer in the Jackson school district and as such feel I am entitled to express my concern regarding the lack of a dress code. I watched some students who appeared to be midteens getting off the school bus recently. Some of the girls' attire could best be described as indecent. Their shorts were the length of those worn by volleyball players. No warm-blooded male could possibly concentrate on what is being taught while sitting next to a girl wearing what these girls were wearing. Since the parents apparently do not enforce modest dressing it makes it all the more important for there to be a dress code in the Jackson Schools.

Noise in the park

Jackson is blessed with one of the most beautiful city parks. It is used by countless walkers, joggers, children and ballplayers. Unfortunately, it is also being used by noisy motorcycles and pickup trucks speeding through without a muffler. In fact, all across Jackson, these vehicles and others with annoying boom boxes speed along unmolested by the Jackson police. I have yet to see one pulled over. A sign at the city limits touts that Jackson has a noise ordinance. But signs do not stop offenders; the police must do that. Some of these vehicles are so loud that they constitute a health hazard.
